While many fans have been complaining and making excuses that the 2006 St. Louis Cardinals were the worst team to ever win a pennant, they are wrong. Let's go all the way back to the year 1973 when the New York Mets defeated the Reds but lost to the Atheltics. I guess you can think of the Reds as the Mets and the A's as the Tigers circa 2006. But anyway the facts prove that the Cardinals were a better team. First of all, the Cardinals had a better record at 83-78 to 82-79 while it may seem like it doesnt matter it shows that the Cardinals had the ability to win one more game then the mets.
Then we look at the poor batting of the Mets who didn't have any starters bat over .300. Their team batting average was .246! While the Cardinals had Albert Pujols bat .331 and their team BA was .269. Not to forget the Mets hit 85 HR's while the Cardinals hit 184! Although the Mets clearly beat the Cardinals when it comes to pitching the Cardinals easily had the edge in many other places. The Cardinals the previous 2 years had had 100 wins at least, each year meaning there was a great modicum of talent already in place. A foundation that many thought could finally take them to the World Series. But the Mets had two 83 win years previously which shows that they were anything but the team that would have been picked to win the Pennant. Another interesting fact is that the Cardinals had 4 All Stars, Chris Carpenter, Albert Pujols, David Eckstein, and Scott Rolen compared to the Mets 2, Tom Seaver and Willie Mays. Mays who by the way was pretty much voted in by the fans because of his popularity not his disappointing stats.
Defense was also an issue for the Mets and not so much for the Cardinals. The Mets had 126 errors compared to the Cardinals 98. The Cardinals also had 2 Gold Glove winners, Scott Rolen and Albert Pujols. As you can see an extremely large difference in defensive talent. I'm hoping now that you've seen the facts, you know that the 1973 Mets were truly the worst team to ever win the pennant. So to everyone who reads this, if you are please stop complaining about how the Cardinals were the worst pennant and world series winner ever. It's not our fault the Padres, Mets, and Tigers couldn't beat us.
