As many Avs fans can understand, this is an unnerving idea. Joe Sakic will not lead the Avs onto the ice this season. For the first time since the Colorado Avalanche were a paintball team (They had to buy the name), Super Joe will not bare a "C" on his chest as one of the best captains of all time. But instead of living in the past, lets look toward the future.
When Sakic retired, I thought the "C" should go to Stastny. I thought that because he is our most talented player, he leads by example, and it would be cool if Joe gave him the "C" because Peter Stastny give the "C" to Joe. But last week the Avs announced that Adam Foote, a 38-year old defenseman, would be captain this season. At first I thought it was stupid. Why would Colorado hold onto the past when all signs point to the future. But then I got to thinking about it. Having a veteran, especially our most experienced, wear the "C" would show respect to an Avs tradition and it gives the Avs choices when Footer retires.
By that I mean, this gives the young guns a chance to prove themselves for the Captainship. Duchene is the future star of the team, a "Peter Forsburg" type player without the death wish. O'Rielly has shown in Juniors that he has leadership ability and has shocked the Avs so far this camp. And my personal choice, Shattenkirk, he is the Captain of one of the best college teams in the nation and chose to stay in school so he could captain them, which shows leadership, and a will to lead. Ofcourse this would all be useless if we would have held onto CHRIS FREAKIN' DRURY!!!! But no, we traded him for stupid Derek Morris. Oh yeah, what a choice, he is our annual MVP of the team. Oh yeah, he's not on the team.
By the by, Foppa is on the comeback trail, I hope he comes back to lead the Avs, but I could understand if he goes to a contender. The Avs are rebuiding and he is a little long in the tooth to be a piece of the future.
