When the San Francisco 49ers hired unproven Jimmy Raye to be the offensive coordinator, we fans were worried that this would be a repeat of the Jim Hostler era. We were right. This guy has no imagination. Today's game was an example of what I"m saying. Like the first week against Arizona, the Niners were unable to move the ball on the ground against an aggressive defensive front. In the first game frank Gore was unable to get going & only gained something like 20-30 yds. Today he was injured on the first play, & his replacement Glen Coffee had the same problem. Not because he's not talented, but because Minnesota constantly had 8-9 men in the box, & because they constantly had someone in the Niners backfield just as QB Sean Hill was receiving the snap.

So why not throw the ball you say? Because that goes against the conservative, take no chances offense that Raye & Singletary have created. It feeds the notion that Hill has a weak arm & is incapable of throwing the ball downfield. The problem with that is , when given the chance, he has delivered. It happened last week & it happened again today with two touchdown passes to Vernon Davis. Twice this year already, Sean Hill has led 80 yard TD drives, mostly through the air.

But what happened at the end of the game? With a little over two minutes to go & the Niners with a 4 point lead, instead of throwing at least once in a disastrous series, Raye had Hill hand off three times. the reult was losing yardage & giving the ball back to the ole gunslinger Brett Favre. Stupid. Now you just don't give a future hall of famer two minutes at the end to win the game, because that's what HOFers do. The result was of course, a highlight reel long bomb to the back of the end zone. Should Mark Roman, the defender, done a better job? Yes. But Favre shouldn't have even had the chance.
