The Chiefs are a team that is kind of hard to guage what they are really trying to do. You have a RB Larry Johnson who is already 28........who wants a huge portion of the Chiefs space for the future. Then you have the whole Damon Haurd/Brodie Croyle contreversey....I just really don't see the need to fix something thats not broken. Haurd did a great job last year. He wasn't asked to do everything just manage the game and don't turnover the football. That's exactly what he did........11Tds and 1Int..........Not bad. Croyle is not ready, it will be a mistake to put him in earlier than he needs to be. To me.......It is definetley easier to find a RB than a Pass Rushing and Run Stopping, Young DE. Jarred Allen is one of the Best in the Game. I'm not joking. The Guy will be a Force at DE and Could be a Monster in the 3-4 OLB Role....I think Allen will be 26.....They should trade Larry Johnson and sign Allen to a long term extension. With Allen and Hali....The Chiefs have one of the top young pass rushing duos in the NFL.
The 2007 NFL draft wasn't the best to the untrained eye......But the Chiefs helped themselves......
1.WR Bowe will come in and push Sammie Parker out of the Picture. The 6-2 221 LSU prospect is a beast. He is a Faster version of Anquan Boldin. This is exactly what the Chiefs needed. A big and fast presence at WR.
2.DT/DE Turk McBride was a ? mark for me.......I know he offers versatility and will play the 2 Gap shooting lineman in this Defense.....But did they reach?
3.DT Tank Tyler was a solid move in the 3rd. He was thought to be a 1st rounder at one point. These two draft picks will have a big impact in a rotation type of play time.
5.RB Kolby Smith is going to make a HUGE impact if Larry Johnson finds a new home. One of those guys who just does everything well. Very Underrated and played behind Michael Bush at Louisville....He reminds me of Terrell Davis.....Not Flashy but just has HEART and PLAYS the game like it should be.
5.K Justin Medlock dominated at the Combine and in all star situations. Plus, 70-88 is not bad...needs to get better between 40 yds but 6-9 from beyond 50 yds.....He will be one of the next Gen of good Kickers.
7.TE Michael Allen from Witworth.....I saw him at the Combine....He worked out well. He will be a good Special teams player and could provide depth at the TE position.
The Achilles heel for the Chiefs is the Offensive Line....Chiefs fans have been spoiled in the Past with LT Roaf, RG Shields..........Current LG Brian Watters, C Kasey Weigmann.......But they are getting up there in age. Insert LT Damon McCintosh and With RG/RT John Welbourn back......This will be a slight upgrade from last year. Look for K.C. to make a strong push for LG Pete Kendall, LG Alan Faneca, RG Brandon Moore (Jets), RG Kendall Simmons, and RT Max Starks....Some of these guys may hit the UFA market.....I think they should go with the Younger guys but if you wanna win now....Maybe Faneca.
The DLine features RE Jarred Allen, LE Tamba Hali, DT James Reed, DT Turk McBride- Allen and Hali.....A++, Reed is solid but 30......Need immediate help from early draft picks.
Linebacking core has gone from a weakness to strength. With the signings of MLB Napolean Harris and ROLB/MLB Donnie Edwards they bring Edwards playmaking ability and Harris has underrated Athleticism. Bell has been a dissapointment.......Derrick Johnson has been a BEAST! But then again he is from TEXAS so its to be expected right?
They need to get younger at CB. Enough said..They have a very strong but old combination.
FS and SS will be set for years to come. SS Bernard Pollard and FS Jerrad Page are two young and outstanding players. While not the fastest players, these guys make the big hits and make plays. I really like these two and hope they keep getting better.
The Chiefs have fixed a couple of leaks in the OLine but only for a while. If Croyle is allowed to start then the Chiefs will be in trouble. Trade Larry Johnson while you can still get something for him. Get another young stud WR and get younger at the Corners.........The Chiefs will be right back in the MIX.
