So much drama was packed into Monday night's game between the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Philadelphia Phillies! Here we have former Phillie Favorite, Randy Wolf, starting this crucial game against his former team. And except for a mistake to Ryan Howard in the first inning (a 2-run homer was the result), Wolf pitched like the seasoned veteran he is, holding the Phillies to just 4 hits and three runs. Joe Torre did not hesitate to use his bullpen, which shut the Phillies down in good fashion up until the ninth inning. Meanwhile, the Phillies starter Joe Blanton was the victim of a rough fourth inning when the Dodgers took advantage of his failure to keep the ball down and scored three runs. Then they scored another run later on an error by Pedro Feliz. The Phils got one run back on a triple by Shane Victorino and a single by Chase Utley, but otherwise were held hitless by by Wolf and the Dodger relief cadre from the second inning until the ninth. So the Dodgers held a 4 - 3 lead and the Phillies seemed to be flummoxed by the LA relievers. When Jonathon Broxton came on in the eighth to get the third out and then retired Raul Ibanez to start the ninth, it looked like he was really on his game, throwing nearly 100 MPH. The Phillies had brought in Brad Lidge with Dodger runners aboard in the top of the ninth inning and, with fingers crossed, we watched him get the side out with no runs being scored. But even a one-run lead looked good for the Dodgers with the great stuff Broxton was hurling. But then a ghost from the past emerged from the Philadelphia dugout - pinch-hitter Matt Stairs batted for the slumping Pedro Feliz with one out in the ninth. Broxton clearly remembered last year's post-season playoff game when Stairs beat him with a titanic homerun. He wanted no part of Stairs, and walked him on four pitches, none of which were close. Then the very determined Carlos Ruiz stood in against Broxton. He is small of stature and looked very overmatched against the hulking Broxton. But Broxton let one pitch slip inside and hit Ruiz, putting men on first and second. Charley Manuel called upon Greg Dobbs to pinch-hit for Lidge, but Dobbs could not cope with Broxton's heat. He hit a little soft liner to Casey Blake at third for the second out. Then Jimmy Rollins came up. Broxton still hadn't given up any hits, but Rollins got the barrel of his bat on a Broxton fastball and sent it to the gap in right-center field. Both pinch-runner Eric Bruntlett and Carlos Ruiz sped around the bases and scored and - just like lightning striking - the Phillies had come back to win 5 - 4. This gives them a 3 to 1 lead in the playoffs. If they can win one more against the Dodgers, they will repeat as NL Pennant winners and go on to the World Series. It was a very tough loss for Broxton and the Dodgers, and it will be hard for Joe Torre to motivate his men back into a better state of mind for Wednesday's game....
