It is definitely a happy day for Steeler fans! Troy Polamalu is staying in Steeler Country!!! Polamalu signed a five year contract worth $33 million. This makes him the highest paid Steeler and highest paid safety in the NFL. He will receive bonuses, including signing and roster bonuses, of $15,375,000. For those of you who don't follow professional football...just how big is this guy? Aside from being the highest paid safety in the league, he's made every Pro Bowl since becoming the Steelers' starting strong safety in 2004. The guy has entire defenses that center about capabilities!! And who doesn't love the hair?! At least now we know that pulling him down from behind by his ponytail is a considered a legal tackle, haha! Ouch! As long as other teams don't pick up on that, we're okay!
I can't even begin to express how excited I am that one of the Steelers' best players is going to be around for another 5 years! He's one of those guys that makes or breaks games with the plays he makes! I miss Cowher tremendously already but I'm liking Mike Tomlin more and more.
Some random Steelers info...Previously, the Steelers' highest paid player was the always smiling wide receiver, Hines Ward. He signed a four year contract extension in 2005 that has a maximum value of $25.8 million. Just two days ago, outside linebacker Lawrence Timmons (first round draft pick) agreed to a five year contract guaranteeing him $12 million. On Monday, guard Alan Faneca reiterated that this would be his last season in Pittsburgh. He tried to negotiate his contract earlier this year but was uphappy when the deal that he was offered was, in his eyes, lower than that of other top guards in the league. This season he's making $4,375,000 but could make double that next year as a free agent. Honestly, I'm okay with him leaving. Any player who's going to bash his team the way Faneca has bashed the Steelers can go ahead and start walking...
