With Michael Crabtree's performance in his first game as a pro future draft picks are going to say "see. He didn't attend training camp and held out a month into the season, & when he finally played he had a good game. I'm going to do the same thing." This is a bad precedent. Not to mention Crabtree saying he was out there "to have fun". Uh no. You're a professional now. You are there to help your team win.
Yes, he had a good game, but Vernon Davis had a better one. The problem of course is that this time, the problem wasn't just the offense, but the defense was poor also. A team that was coming off a bye week had two weeks to prepare for a team not any better than themselves & came out flat. No offense whatsoever. Sean Hill looked horrible & was replaced at halftime by first pick flop Alex Smith, who finally looked like a real quarterback. Unfortunately, there wasn't enough time even with an entire half to come back. Not when the Niners were down 21-0 at halftime.
Part of this rests on a coaching staff that just doesn't get it. Down a score with 3 minutes left, the team is taking it's time calling plays. Twice in this game there were delay of game penalties. Is this incompetence by OC Jimmy Raye & his staff? I don't think he understands how to use the clock. Two scores were needed.
Crabtree won't be going to the playoffs this year unless the Niners find a way to trade him to a better coached team. I can't decide if I want him to do good or not, because I found his holdout & his behavior to be unacceptable. T.O. without the background.
