As the the normal MLS season started to wrap up, a handful of teams found themselves in a dog pile for the last couple slots in the MLS playoffs. RLS, Revolution, Rapids, DC United, Toronto FC, and FC Dallas all were within just a couple points to eachother. These last few games would make all the difference.
As stated in a previous post, I didn't think the Revs had a chane. The last 3 games were pretty dismal and the last game of the season was against Columbus Crew, currently the top team in the Eastern Conference, who beat them in the Rev's own home stadium in Foxboro just a couple weeks ago. There were so many other teams lobbying for the slots and I didn't think they even had a chance, but as the weekend everything started to line up in the Rev's favor. NYRB had an impressive 5-0 game vs Toronto FC which prevented them from getting any pointes, DC only picked up 1 point from the Wizards, and sounders prevented FC Dallas from picking up any more points. The stars aligned and the scenario was set, it would all come down to the last game of the MLS standard season, Revs vs Columbus Crew in Columbus.
With an amazing kick by Jeff Larentowic the ball was in the back of the net, a goal that eventually won the game 1-0 for the Revs. It was a really great goal, fast and straight through the defense, just barely ahead of the hands of the keeper. It had been said all week the fate was now "in their own hands" and they did it. They won and qualified themselves for the playoffs.
Their first playoff game will be this Saturday, Oct 31st vs Chicago Fire. It's really too bad that's Halloween and we have plans, otherwise we'd totally be there. We'll just have to watch it from home as we're getting the trick-or-treats ready.
