I thought I had heard and seen a lot of senseless junk this week, until I read that the Boston Celtics were about to suspend Glen Davis for his part in an altercation with a childhood friend.
For those of you who aren't aware, Davis was on his way home when his friend assaulted him. Davis retaliated and, in the process, hurt his hand. Everyone on the scene agrees that it was self-defense. Should have been case closed.
But no, not in this disgustingly topsy-turvy society, with its so-called code of respectable conduct. Davis is now suspended, and the team is plastering it all over the media that this whole incident was somehow his fault. Owner Grousbeck even said he was "no longer Big Baby, but Glen, and he needs to start acting like Glen."
Grousbeck is right. Davis should have beaten the man right into the pavement. Where do these idiots get off implying that a man has no right to defend himself? You wanna see how stupid that philosophy is? Look at our schools, where kids who fight all get the same punishment, no matter who starts it. Nice way to let bullies who don't care about suspension or jail go after kids who do. I once had a principal look me in the eye and said that, for that not to happen, a kid needed to stand there and let his face get beaten in.
Maybe Grousbeck needs to have someone punch him in the face, and see how he would react. Not so easy to act self-righteous then, is it? But no matter. He can act this way because he's the owner. Forget about realistic responses to outside threats.
Davis, you shouldn't have taken only $6 million over two years to stay and play for people like that. You deserve a team with an owner who hasn't forgotten what it's like to be a man first and a piece of contractual property second.
