Tim Donaghy, if the accusations prove true, will be the Arnold Rothstein of pro basketball.
For those of you who weren't around in 1919 (or didn't see Michael Lerner's slimy portrayal of Rothstein in Eight Men Out), Rothstein was the guy who took advantage of some grumpy Chicago players and got them to throw the World Series. Yep, THAT Black Sox scandal.
I suppose it's possible that Donaghy didn't do anything that cost any team a game or the playoffs, but it's also possible. VERY POSSIBLE.
The entire Donaghy saga proves one thing. Even if you think you're in big, big trouble, things can't -- and often do -- get worse.
In his case, Donaghy allegedly gets into debt with some bad characters on some bad gambling choices (no doubt betting on the Mets to make the Series last year) and then has to "repay the debt" by helping turn some other bets in someone else's favor.
So, rather than approach the league and say, "Yeah, I messed up," Donaghy makes the deal with his bookies. I guess he saw 'Goodfellas' too.
And now it's worse.
Much worse.
Do yourself a favor, now Timmy, 'fess up. Frankly, it's something you should have done a long time ago.

Its way too late for fess up time. If Donaghy spills even one bean regarding his mob ties he is a marked man for life. He cant win. No matter what he does he will be persona non gratta, but if he squeals, he will persona six feet unda.
