NatsLogoPhoenix Desert Dogs took a 6-5 loss yesterday to Surprise.  They remain in first place at 12-7.

Danny Espinosa went 2-6 with his 3rd double of winter ball and scored a run.  He is batting a nice .321 on the season.  His fellow Nat prospect Chris Marrero also went 2-6 and is batting an impressive .362.

P Aaron Crow, who was the Nationals first round pick in 2008, but failed to reach terms with the Nationals, pitched for Surprise and got hit for 6 hits and 4 runs in 3.1 innings.  Crow has made  2 starts in the AFL and has allowed 6 runs over 7.1 innings.

None of the other Nationals pitcher made appearances yesterday.

Count Mattingly out . . . Former Yankee great and current Dodgers base coach Don Mattingly is out of the running for the Washington Nationals managerial opening.   There are reports that Mattingly has turned down the Nationals request to interview.

There is apparently some belief that this indicates that Mattingly and his current employer, the Los Angeles Dodgers, are formalizing some kind of plan for hitting coach Mattingly to take over for Joe Torre when Torre finally decides to call it quits.

Makes complete sense for Mattingly.  If he indeed is negotiating to take over for Joe Torre at some point, then why would Mattingly want to come to Washington where a rebuild is in process, compared to the LA Dodgers who are annual contenders.   The prestige of managing the Dodgers is also much higher and well respected than the Nats at this point.  Makes sense for Mattingly.

In addition, in LA, Mattingly will some day work for an organization willing to do what it takes to win and spend what it takes.  That has yet to be proven in Washington.
