If you read my last post about the World Series you will notice I pegged the series right on the nail head. The Phillies scored runs, did not get "shut down" , BUT, the Yankees and especially their hero, Godzilla, could not be stopped.

Are you kidding me, six RBIs in one game after tearing up Phillies pitching in previous games. What was Charlie M thinking? I understand that he had to pitch to Matsui when the bases were loaded but come on, how do you let one guy destroy you in a World Series game. Give credit to Matsui, he hung in there and hit a high fast ball from Pedro in center field to drive in runs 3 and 4. Those were the two runs that actually drove the stake through the hearts of the Phils and their fans. It was another classic two out moment in World Series history that will haunt the Phillies for a long time to come. Just like the ninth inning of a tied game 4 when the Phillies pitching could not get anyone out.

Now, I could go into, and there will be some that will say, the absence of Ryan Howard's bat through the series lost this one for the Phillies but when the dust settles I think everyone will realize that the Yankees line up was just too patient and disciplined to be denied. That same line up managed to score 32 runs in the six games. Anytime your pitching averages giving up over five runs per game during a series you really cannot expect to win.

How did the Yankees pitching fair? Well, initially it appears they did not do much better averaging 4.5 runs per game but where the true numbers come out is in what the starters actually hit during the series. Jeter and Matsui averaged .407 and .615 respectively while Rollins and Ibanez hit .217 and .304. The .304 was the best of the Phillies through the series. I don't have the spits but the Phillies were constantly whiffing through opportunities with runners in scoring position. They ended up 10 for 45 while the Yankees went 14 for 42 with RISP. That becomes a .222 compared to the Yankees .333 batting with RISP.

All in all , it was not one of the better World Series but it did have its highlights. Congratulations to the Yankees.
