So, is Hideki Matsui staying or leaving to the M's? Are the Yankees finally shutting down in free agency? Are the Phillies chasing after Mark DeRosa? This and more random musings for the first Sports Musing edition.
Hideki Matsui was Godzilla throughout the World Series, but will he stay Godzilla for much longer? His future in Pinstripes is certainly uncertain. But there is a rumor that he will join fellow Japanese star Ichiro Suzuki in Seattle. Was Matsui's 6 RBI preformance his last? Who knows? As a Yankees fan, I would love to see him back and he can only help us. He is aging and can only play DH, but if the money is good-it will probably be- Matsui has got to stay. This year Hideki Matsui hit 28 homers, with 90 RBIs. He also played 142 games and came up to the plate 456 times. He had a .509 Slugging Percentage along with a .876 OPS. Not bad for a 35 year old.
So, last years splurge counts towards this year for the Bombers. This winter, the Yanks will try and make money after their World Series/100 game season and not spend any. I guess they feel they are in a good position. Now all they are saying is they will not go after any big name players, but they may sign some average starters or relievers to plug-in. It will be interesting to see who is going to spend. Jason Bay, Matt Holliday, and John Lackey are the big free agents this year. Lackey is looking for five years and 100 million- I wonder who will pay for it- and Bay is looking for 90 million over the course of five years. Now what is interesting to me is that Scott Boras wants Matt Holliday to make the same money Mark Teixeira does. And Matty is good, but he is not under the caliber of Tex. No way Boras. No way.
On to that DeRosa thingy. Charlie Manuel- manager of the Phillies for the uninitiated- says he does not like to take J-Roll and Utley out of the lineup because he has no good backups. Eric Bruntlett can play D, triple play, but he cannot swing that bat. They are looking for an upgrade on Bruntlett- who is not sticking with the team anyway. Marco Scutaro and Mark DeRosa headline that list. It will be hard to sign them without giving them the starting job, and they may have to pay quite a bit for a good role player. DeRosa could even overtake Raul Ibanez in the outfield, unlikely but possible.
My favorite player in baseball was Tim Lincecum. But now that he is a pothead, I will stick with that Chase Utley guy. Lincecum was caught speeding, when he was pulled over, the cop smelt some marijuana. Timmy cooperated and the weed was found. He was fined $250 for misdemeanor. He still will get fined $122 for speeding. There is not much news on that because only bits and pieces of it have been confirmed. All I can say is, another hero goes down.
We saw the White Sox make some useless trades last year to acquire a struggling Peavy and an unproductive and expensive Alex Rios. Now they go on and make a trade with a team in their division. This time, it is clear that it is hurting them. Now the Sox say the deal has not been confirmed, but it looks like it is. Mark Teahan swapped for Chris Getz and Josh Fields. In my opinion, I would only trade Fields for Teahan. And they add Getz? Teahan put in a crowded outfield, nice very nice. Theo Epstein says that the Red Sox got a good bargain in acquiring the 25 year old outfielder Jeremy Hermida from the Florida Marlins. He has struggled, but Epstein says he has good upside. Theo is usually right though, and it was a good acquiration in my honest opinion. Akinori Iwamura was traded to the Pirates, so Pittsburgh is adding players now, and boy does Aki suck. If I was the Pirates GM, I would look the other way. The White Sox decline the option for star Jermaine Dye, very intriguing. The Twins swap speedster Carlos Gomez for SS JJ Hardy. Maybe Hardy needs a new scenery. But the Twins have put a lot of hope in him. Will Andy Pettitte stay a Yankee? Pettitte joined Derek Lowe (2004) and Freddy Garcia (2005) as the only other pitchers this decade to win the clinching games of the World Series, ALCS, and ALDS in a single playoffs. He also won two games in the World Series. He says so, and I hope so. Manny wil stay with LAD next year, and Lee's $9M option was picked up by the Phillies. Great choice guys. The D'Backs use their option on ace Brandon Webb. They still have confidence in the man that crash-landed in 09. Charlie Manuel vows to get the title back, hunger, rash actions, or is he right? The Reds decline the option for catcher Ramon Hernandez, but they say they still want him. The Mets are not going to keep star reliever JJ Putz, who may no longer be a star in this league. Will Jarrod Washburn return to the M's? He sucked in 09 for the Tigers, but was incredible that year for the Mariners. Livan Hernandez could become the ace of the Nats. Josh Beckett is going to talk about a contract extension that he deserves.
That raps it up, check us next time on Sports Musings. Thanks for reading. I hope you enjoyed.

Yeah the Phillies bench was atrocious. But Manuel is scenile anyway and wouldn't have done anything even with a good bench. They could have really used a big righty bat off the bench, but they had Stairs a lefty and a bunch of defensive specialist guys. Ibanez looked completely overmatched by CC and Pettite. Its an immediate advantage to the AL when you think about it, to have a guy on your payroll (DH) thats a glorified hitter off the bench
