Why I Love Fantasy Football: Reason #672 | 1st & Zen

I have a self imposed mandate on how many fantasy football teams I sign up for a year. I have limited it to two teams. One being a longstanding league started with some co-workers at the time (“The Justice League”) about four years ago. This is the one I take most seriously. We all get together for the draft over pizza and beer at a neutral location. The other being a random free league, usually through NFL.com which I make sure is autodraft. I like auto draft because it gives me the feeling of being a new GM inheriting a team that I didn’t hand pick. Why just two? Because after years of having multiple teams it turned out to be more of a job than being fun.

Which brings me to one of many reasons I LOVE FANTASY FOOTBALL. Team names. I happen to think there is an art form to finding the appropriate name for a team. For the free league I usually find a public league run by metalheads. That way I can name my team something ridiculous as it pertains to heavy metal. This year I have joined the METALHEADZ league. My team name? In honor of one of my fave albums I dubbed my team “Black Sabbath Vol. IV”.

For my longstanding league, we have an unspoken pact that dictates that each member has to come up with the most ridiculous team name. The wittier the pop cultural reference the better. This year I am revising the moniker of “I’m A Loner Dottie, A Rebel”. Other team names past and present in this league have been real winners.

I think it adds an element of entertainment and is always the subject of one-upsmanship among the participants. I mean how boring is it being in a league with team names like “The Atlanta Tigers” or “Northside Bears”. I mean it’s fantasy football, not the real thing so get creative with the team names!
