Joke.Travesty.Mockery.Pathetic.Abbomination.Rediculous.Replay. These are the words currently associated with the biggest international sporting scandal since Average Joe's Gym forfeit the A.D.A.A Championships only to be given new life by the thumb of one Chuck Norris. Thierry Henry palming the ball like a basketball player, right in the heart of Irish goal, only to deliver a sweet little lob pass to teammate William Gallas, for the games decisive goal. The whole world saw it, the Irish pleaded with the ref and linesman, but they missed it, so the goal stood, and Irelands World Cup dreams were crushed. How can something like this possibly happen in this day in age? Sure 30 some odd years ago a dude named Diego tipped a ball in with his hands sending Argentina on their way to a world cup W. But there was no H.D back then. No instant replays. There weren't 100's of cameras catching every angle of the action to be evaluated and scrutinized by the world over. Back then there was almost nothing we could have done. But today? If soccer would join most of the modern sporting world, sans baseball, in using the technology available to them and institute some form of review on highly contested calls, such as this, then errors like this would be a thing of the past. What is the harm in taking a minute or two to just quickly peek at tape and make sure you got it right?. The Referees, F.I.F.A, France and Ireland's soccer bodies could have saved years worth of grief and suffering by just looking it over. A quickie you might say.
But they didn't. They won't. Instead they just let the game finish, and the speculation begin. Was it rigged? Overlooked on purpose? Did France pay the officials? Were the officials french? Endless amounts of questions to be asked and debated for eternity. One thing's for sure though, Ireland got Thierryed.
