Yep, its that time again and its approaching very fast. Players have had very hot starts ( Stamkos, Thornton, Heatley..etc) and some have had terrible starts ( Ward, Lecavalier..etc). IMO Team Canada now has its centers in place: Crosby (#1), Getzlaf (#2), Richards (#3) and Thornton (#4). We also know who our 2 top goaltenders will be: Brodeur and Luongo. Now it gets interesting finding the wingers. Should Yzerman select wingers where the centers have chemistry already established? Getzlaf-Perry, Thornton-Heatley, Richards-Carter? Its a legit concern IMO. Chemistry is HUGE. Or should Yzerman select wingers where there is no chemistry and rely on talent alone? These questions are the hard questions for Yzerman and Co to make. That covers the forwards.
What about the D? There's names out there that are locks: Pronger, Niedermayer, Weber, and Keith. Does Yzerman go with the hot hand and select Drew Doughty (20 points in 24 games)? How about Mike Green where his game suffers on the defensive side of the puck but excels on offense and the PP? Who rounds out the rest after the top 4? Bouwmeester? Phaneuf? Boyle? Barker?
What about the 3rd goalie? Ward's injured and he's played terrible so far. Is Fleury a given? Or should Yzerman select Turco who has the better #'s?
After Team Canada is all selected, how's their chances at the Gold Medal? Realistically? Can Canada shut down the offensive powerhouse that is Russia? You know the Swedes are always a threat. How about Team USA with Miller and Thomas manning the net? 1 bad game and its all over for any country. Its basically game 7 after game 7 where anything can and has happened.
You think you can do a better job than Yzerman? Hows your prediction skills?
Lets hear it.
