Donovan McNabb sure stepped in it this time.

McNabb was asked about the Michael Vick situation today, and he came out in support of Vick, if not in support of his activities.  It seems to me that McNabb avoided the mistakes of Emmitt Smith and Clinton Portis by not talking about dogfighting directly and implying it isn't a big deal.  McNabb focused more on supporting Vick as a friend through this process.  Still, in my opinion McNabb should have offered a "no comment".  With McNabb, fans seem to have a particular talent for taking his words in the worst possible way, and people are already lumping him in with Smith and Portis.

I can understand that Vick is his friend, and like any of us, he might want to support his friend through a legal crisis.  But the rest of us aren't public figures and team leaders.  McNabb has to think more carefully about how things are going to look when he says something about such a hot button issue.  So there are two conclusions here...one, McNabb understood this and decided to show some courage and support Vick anyway, or he didn't understand at all how this was going to shake out.

Either way, it was ill-advised.  What do you guys think?

I agree. He should have just said "no comment." At least he made it clear that he supports Vick as a friend, not dogfighting.

"NO COMMENT" would have been the right thing for McNabb. If he supports Vick as a friend, leave it personal. As for his comments being perceived as McNabb attempting to shed the "company man" image, it's just that - perception. Keeping his comments to himself would have been the best - for Donovan. Now, let's get on with it > Go Eagles!!
