I am getting sick of these rookies who want all this huge money before they ever participate in an NFL PRESEASON GAME,much less a game that actually counts.
Look at JaMarcus Russel and Brady Queer, err Quinn.Look at most of the first, and some second rounders.Look at the Browns Travis Wilson,a third rounder who held out for a week last year.
Personally,I think all rookie contracts should be performance based. The player gets big money when he reaches certain things, for example:
Quarterbacks- Completions in a season,completion percentage,QB rating,yards in a season,touchdowns
Running Backs- Carries in a season,average yards per carry,number of 100 yard games,yards in a season,touchdowns
Wide Recievers/Tight Ends- Catches in a season,first down catches,yards in a season,touchdown catches
Offensive Linemen- Pancake blocks in a season, sacks allowed in a season (you get a certain amount...say 3 million for giving up no sacks, less for giving up one,two,three...but there must be a minimum of snaps played before this takes effect)
Defensive Linemen- Sacks, tackles, tackles behind the LOS
Linebackers- Sacks, tackles, tackles behind the LOS,interceptions, passes defended
Defensive Backs- Tackles, sacks, tackles behind the LOS,interceptions, passes defended
Any position- Making All-Pro,making the Pro Bowl,MVP,DPOY,OPOY,ROY
I just think the rookies need to earn thier money first.Give them a decent signing bonus and the minimum salary, they get the big bucks if they perform on the field.
Too many times a player busts and the team is held liable for so much of his contract when the guy gets cut.If the NFL put it in place where this is the ONLY way a rookie gets his money,it would help the team...and it would end a lot of holdouts.
