At 12:03 AM Eastern time on Wednesday, August 8, 2007, I learned the tragic news that Barry Bonds hit number 756*. I first learned this when my good friend Greg, also known as Terpsfan, posted a comment on my "My 11 Most Hated People Involved In Sports..." blog that he had broken the record. I just had to know. I went to trusty CBS Sportsline and saw the following in a Breaking News box:
Bonds blasts No. 756, passes Aaron
Barry Bonds' third hit of the night is a deep blast off Mike Bacsik, the 756th home run of Bonds' career. He is now baseball's all-time leader, one ahead of Hall of Famer Hank Aaron
I was shocked. The first thing I did was IM my friend Craig with the following:
Me: WHAT THE F--- 756*********
Me: HE EFFING HIT IT
Me: OH THE HUMANITY
Craig: Like right now?
Then we continued to cuss mindlessly for a few minutes as I did the same with many other people. So it's over. 8 August 2007 will be in my mind forever.
On the other hand, thank you eight pound, six ounce, Lord Baby Jesus that it's over. No longer do I have to watch every at bat on ESPN. Now the deed is 100% done. I don't have much to say. I went the first 15 years of my life knowing Hank Aaron as the most prolific home run king ever. What do I do now? Anyway, I feel as if I am in shock.
Barry, you better keep that throne warm for Mr. Rodriguez.
