With the Hall of Fame game firing up last weekend, I can feel the electricity in the air -- it's almost football season. No more hearing about basketball and the latest overpaid crybaby whine about playing for a certain team, or listening to people argue back and forth about steroids; though, I must admit, I've been part of that. But football season is almost here. Seventeen weeks of grown men fling themselves at each other, chess games with the defense and offense, coaches and players screaming. College or Pro? Does it really matter? In the end it's still great football that isn't played in Canada or on a sixty yard field.
A few changes I hope will happen -- first and foremost, don't take our football overseas. The places they want to go may have an interest, but not a following like the fans here in the states. A preseason game I can understand, and that's understandable, but lets not let the regular season out of the country.
No more rule changes. Every year they hinder players more. I can understand the idea of playing for safety, but lets not ruin the game flow and play, these are adults getting paid a lot of money to entertain us, don't bore us by putting shackles on the defense.
And finally, keep the overtime the way it is. So many people want it changed to the Kansa City Playoff system that the college's use, but I say keep it. It's another way for the two to be different. Another big step up. If your defense can't stop the offense, well, get a better defense. If it's a defensive struggle and no one scores, get a better offense. It's a good way to prove who's better on each side of the ball. Yes the advantage is to the person who wins the coin flip but like I said earlier -- better defense.
The Truth and Rumors page is getting filled with stories that are becoming closer and closer relevant to the NFL and College and it great to see it. I can wade through stories about Harrington admitting he can't read a defense in preparation for the better stories. So football fans, rejoice! Our season is almost here!
