So Clemens will be suspended, as expected, for hitting Rios after both benches were warned Tuesday night.
It's a lousy rule, suspending the guy getting even while the guy who starts it gets a pass, and tossing the manager as well. So as opinionated fans, we must ask ourselves...what would be a better rule?
1. No rule at all...let the teams slug it out between the lines, and the umps can toss someone when they think things are getting out of hand.
2. Keep the current rule, but also toss the opposing team's starting pitcher along with the 2nd offender (and manager?), so maybe the first offender doesn't feel quite so untouchable.
3. Call a balk if the ump thinks the peg was intentional, upping the cost of hitting someone.
4. Toss the pitcher if the batter is hit above the shoulder or below the knee, which players agree is the unspoken rule of inside pitching.

My thoughts exactly. Under that scenario, a reasonable ump would have allowed Clemens' payback and let the game move on.
