I don't know if it's on the orders of Major League Baseball, but the Texas Rangers made a very stupid trade today. Kevin Millwood, while not a 20-game winner, is a dependable innings eater at the top of the rotation and a solid veteran presence on a team that sorely needs more than just Michael Young in that regard.
As far as it being called a salary dump, why do it when you've already got a small (comparatively) payroll as it is, even smaller with Andruw Jones, Pudge Rodriguez, as well as maybe Marlon Byrd signing elsewhere?
As far as the Rangers getting Chris Ray (in the deal) and Rich Harden (free agent), there are a lot of injury risks here. Ray had an awful year last year and Harden was injury-prone. I like the Harden signing, but would have liked it more had he been the number two guy behind Millwood.
Either way, the Rangers need to step up their free agent pursuits, because once again the Yankees have beat them (and everyone else) to the punch.
