Last night Lane Kiffin and the Raiders began their climb out of the deep hole that Art Shell dug for the Raiders last season. It was nice to see all three QBs have some success with our new offense. Josh McCown was solid after going 3 and out. He led the Raiders on a 14 play 7 min drive that was capped off by a short TD run by Dominic Rhodes. Andrew Walter showed what he can do when he has protection. He completed 8 of 11 passes and threw a perfect fade to Mike Williams for a TD. He looked poised out there. He stood tall in the pocket and delivered some accurate passes. He even took a pretty good hit to deliver a 1st down on 3rd and long. Daunte Culpepper would have liked to start his career with the Raiders a little better. On his 1st play, he couldn't get the ball from the center and the Cards recovered. On his next pass attempt he got hit and the pass was ruled a fumble. Two turnovers is not the way you restart your career. Once he settled down he played solid. He looked good rolling out and firing accurate passes to Buchanon and Higgins, but they both let the ball bounce off of their hands. His leg didn't seem to bother him when he had to move around. We all knew he still had the rocket arm which he displayed on a nearly perfect pass to Johnny Lee Higgins for a 50 yd gain. The running game also looked good. Dominic Rhodes had a few good runs. He gained 13 yards on a run that started to the right, then he cut it back up the middle. Our new zone-run-block scheme should pay off with some long runs this year. Fargas and Echemandu played alright. Michael Bush didn't see any action which likely means that we are going have to wait until the 08 season to see him play. The WRs looked good. Jerry Porter caught a pass at the line of scrimmage and then broke a tackle and gained 15 yards. Mike Williams had a few nice catches. He showed us how he uses his size as an advantage. He hauled in a short fade from Walter for a TD. At 6'5" he should emerge as a go to guy in the redzone. Johnny Lee Higgins looked very explosive out there. He also caught a short pass, like Porter, made a guy miss and gained some positive yards. He combined with Culpepper on a 50 yard gain to set up a score. Our starting defense looked dominant with two 3 and outs to start the game. Overall, I was impressed with what I saw from the Raiders last night. We still have a lot of work to do but it was a good start. Lane Kiffin has a big task ahead of him but if last night's performance was any indication of our future, then I am excited about Raider football this year. I'M IN !
