Welcome to the official first Hockey post ever recorded in the history of The Necessary Roughness Blog.

 

According to wikipedia, the The Portland Winterhawks are a major junior ice hockey team, playing in the Western Hockey League, a member league in the Canadian Hockey League, the highest level of non-professional hockey in the world. They play their home games at the Memorial Coliseum, though typically a few games each season are also played in the neighboring Rose Garden.

 

In addition, a teddy bear toss is a popular Christmas season promotion at many minor and junior hockey arenas throughout North America where fans are encouraged to bring teddy bears to the game, and to throw them onto the ice when the home team scores its first goal. (Proving the title of this post correct)

 

These teddy bears are then gathered up and donated as Christmas presents to hospitals and charities. (Can't argue with a charity for kids I guess.) 

 

This is a tradition most popular in the Western Hockey League cities of Calgary, Alberta and Portland, Oregon.
