Of all the great moves Brian Cashman has made this offseason, it may be the one he didn’t make that brings the most attention. In typical Brett Favre fashion, Bernie Williams has sat on the fence the last couple of seasons pondering the end of his career and ultimate retirement. Spending an entire career in pinstripes is no accident and the biggest mistake the Yankees could make in 2007 is not bringing him back.
Bernie Williams came up through the Yankees organization and made his debut midway through the 1991 season. Since then, Bernie has been a fixture in the Yankees outfield, winning four World Series titles while maintaining a career .297 batting average and leading post season statistics in home runs (22) and RBIs (80). During his “supporting” role last season, the Yankees came to heavily rely on him as the outfield was plagued with injuries. And in this newfound role he put up unexpected numbers, hitting .281 with 12 homers and 61 RBIs in 131 games. With 16 seasons in the Bronx under his belt, doesn’t he deserve a little more respect than a minor league contract?
Now I understand the politics of what is best for the team, and the fact that the roster is stacked, especially in the outfield, but we are talking about “BER-NIE WILL-IAMS” (clap clap, clap clap clap), Bern Baby Bern!, Mr. Cool, Calm, Collected…is this really how we want to send him out? So I am asking you Mr. Cashman, for the sake of all that is unholy in seeing Bernie Williams in any uniform other than pinstripes, please cancel bat day, replica hat day, and any other day that will allow fans to cherish Bernie Williams for one last hurrah in 2007.
