Are professional athletes obligated to give back to society? This is a question that???s been debated in professional circles for along time
Mia Hamm the US women???s soccer legend writes
???Whatever choice you make and however you decide to give back, I believe that we all have an obligation to help those less fortunate than us, whether we are professional athletes or not.???
But obligation is such a strong word, it binds us to a certainty rather than a choice. Does she mean that being born as a human being obligates us to give back to the human race? Then who defines what this giving back means? The last time I checked, we fought for the right to decide for ourselves. The only obligation nature intended was for us to fight for our own survival.
Everyone should give back, so we say, and yet everyone doesn???t give back. Some choose to, some choose not to, some do so and yet people still complain that it isn???t enough. But why is it then that a Mia Hamm, a Michael Jordan or a Tiger Woods are not judged by the same set of criteria? We, the general public seem to be less obligated than the professional athlete. Is it simply a matter of money? Because the more these guys make the more they pay taxes, isn???t that obligation enough?
I think giving back to society is a great thing. I think these athletes have enough resources to make a real difference if they so choose; and I applaud them for it. But I don???t think they should be obligated, I didn???t give that homeless guy on the street my dollar last night, I can???t expect Dwayne Wade to give up a million.
