Wayne Krivsky is a mastermind. Yes, a lot of Reds fans are disgruntled and think he is clueless because the club is struggling, but he has to be a genius. Just look at the facts:
Carlos Zambrano just signed a five-year, $91.5 million dollar contract extension with the Cubs. That's an average of over $18 mil a year. Terry Ryan has to be taking all trade offers for Johan Santana now, because he has to get $20 mil per year at a minimum, but I digress.
What makes Krivsky so smart in my mind? First let's look at some numbers (since start of 2006 season):
Pitcher A:
60 GS, 28-14, 3.65 ERA, 401.2 IP, 1.22 WHIP, 369 K, 3.77 K/BB
Zambrano:
59 GS, 30-16, 3.61 ERA, 382 IP, 1.30 WHIP, 349 K, 1.82 K/BB
Peavy:
56 GS, 24-19, 3.28 ERA, 360 IP, 1.16 WHIP, 379 K, 3.58 K/BB
Webb:
58 GS, 28-16, 2.96 ERA, 410.2 IP, 1.17 WHIP, 333 K, 3.14 K/BB
Oswalt:
58 GS, 28-14, 3.13 ERA, 394.1 IP, 1.24 WHIP, 292 K, 3.17 K/BB
Pitcher A is under contract for the next four years at $36.5 million. He is the most underrated player in the game today. He is Aaron Harang. Compare his extension to what Oswalt and Zambrano have gotten, and you can see my point. I'd hate to be in the Padres and Diamondbacks shoes when trying to extend Peavy and Webb.
Krivsky locked him up during the offseason. If he can continue to get deals like this done, he'll have a long, successful career with the Reds.
