This may seem a little odd to all the rest of you, but until now I was unable to watch Football on the weekends because I don't own a television. Thank goodness for Christmas, I picked up an eyetv, now I can enjoy sports on the weekend on my computer. (Ok rereading this post sounds a little spammy, but trust me it's not, I'm just excited that I can actually watch sports on my computer now, without having to buy a television.)
For the most part not having a television hasn't effected me at all. Most of the popular television shows are available online anyway, on-demand and with fewer and shorter commercial breaks. One area that is not so web-friendly however is sports.
There is a ton of money wrapped into the right to broadcast sports. Which makes sense, it's big business and those broadcasting it stand to make a lot of money in return for it. Though readily available on big network channels for free on tv, they almost never broadcast them online. Replays and recaps yes, actual games no.
This last year I followed soccer quite a bit and after searching, the best thing I found was a site called justin.t. For the most part games were available. Usually in Spanish, but if it wasn't a big game the game stayed on. Big games were shut down usually after a couple minutes of play due to copyright infringment. That goes for a lot of American Football matches as well.
Thank goodness for Christmas. We still weren't ready to buy a television just to watch sports. So instead I picked up a nice little gadget called the eyetv. It's a usb stick that plugs into the computer with an antenna input. So yesterday as I played around with it I realized I can finally watch Football on the weekends! A little late I know, as the season is wrapping up, but at least I have it for next season and the rest of this one. I'm excited. I think this is going to open up a lot more opportunities to follow teams and get into the sport and other sports for that matter more.
