I remember a day when the biggest story on ESPN was Who's now, Kobe Bryant Trade Demands, and the Yankees being in last place. Since the Summer of our discontent continued it has been refs gambling, juicers breaking records, and of course, dogfighting.
We could prepare ourselves to see Barry Bonds break the Homerun record, that has been coming for a while. The NBA ref story hit hard but it didn't nearly get the response of what has been the biggest sports story this side of Kobe Case. I haven't seen this much outrage since David Chase fooled everyone into thinking thier cable box went out(by the way, that ending sucked).
Really you go threw most walks of life and most people have the same reaction. "I'M OUTRAGE! I'M IN DISBELIEF! HOW COULD ANYONE DO THIS! WHAT KIND OF PERSON DOES THIS TO A POOR ANIMAL! WHAT KIND OF MONSTER CAN HURT SUCH AN INNOCENT ANIMAL!"
To that I say Whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa...Were talkin about Pitbulls and Innocent animal. Where was the outrage when Pits were doing this:
http://www.topix.com/forum/city/winter-springs-fl/TMJQB6C7OOSONHOTT/p2
or stories such as these at the bottom of this page:
http://www.theindychannel.com/news/13415948/detail.html?rss=ind&psp=news
Why isn't there the same outrage when this happens:
http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2005/06/03/national/main699664.shtml
or this:
http://www.startribune.com/462/story/1367673.html
Or even this:
http://abclocal.go.com/wls/story?section=local&id=3612370
Where are the outrage for these? Why is PETA defending these actions and protesting Mike Vick? Where at the picket signs and fences for all these cases?
No I'm not saying becasue Mike Vick killed a dangerous dog that makes it anymore right, BUT I'm saying a Pitbull is not exactly the friendest animal on the face of the Earth. Statically they attack more than any other breed of dog. All I'm saying is why is it such an outrage when a human kills an animal then when an animal kills a human?
Look, what Mike Vick basically did was take an animal out of it's original element and force it to do something against it's will for personal entertainment. Yes I know thats the black and white of it but basically thats what he did. The circus does the same thing with elephants.

http://www.captiveanimals.org/circuses/circus.htm
Now I don't know if of the animals were hung or electruted afterwards but I know people attend circuses year around. Fact is, people don't seem to care that much because most people aren't "elephant". Hmm and I thought it was about the animal cruelty. Even tho those innocent animals are force to be on the road for a part of the year and there not exactly traveling in spacious compartment. We can say Mike Vick did some cruel things to those dogs but we don't have an idea what he did with the dogs BEFORE they fought. Mike Vick is rich, so for all we know those dogs could have been eating better than you and me. Or those dogs could have been chained up by thier legs. I haven't seen anything about it yet so I don't know
Does anyone remember when this story broke:
http://www.animal-lib.org.au/lists/fish/fish.shtml
No one cares about that to much either. Thier no picketing of ESPN when they show that. I don't see ESPN showing clips of that kind of "cruelty".
Look this is not a defense of Mike Vick, Its a call out to all people who are going on radio shows, bloggin online, talking in chatroom about how terrible Mike Vick is for killing such innocent animals. Where are these so-called "animal cruelty haters" at when other types of animal cruelty are going on? Why only stop at the torturing of dogs? If he was Elephant fighting or raccoon fighting would you have the same outrage?
Lets flip that, Why is a pit bull such a nice defenseless animal? Are they still the same innocent animals when they attack kids and elderly people?
But then again we're talking about sports and the way sports is covered which of course leads to numberous hypocrites saying thier two cents. Barry Bonds gets treated like crap, while Lance Armstrong gets the treatment although neither have failed a drug test and both have had books written about them. Barry Bonds gets treated like crap while the other people who failed a drug test don't get a boo. Its cool to hate Barry Bonds.
Just like the NBA "thug" image thats comes out after every fight dispite MLB and NHL has had people arrest for on the field incidents and have way more bench clearing fights than the NBA. But its cool the hate on the NBA.
Its Hypothical. But it will always be that way with sports...

Uh, did you know that the dogs are trained by people and that the actions of aggressive dogs are due to the way their owners, in some cases dogfighters, have abused them? You didn't know that did you. The dogs are not naturally aggressive attackers, they are trained to be that way. A dog just wants to please you, yes some dogs have inherent traits, but owners are the ones who encourage or discourage those traits.

HI Kyle ??? I am also a 49s fan and live around San Francisco. I see you are 19, so you may not remember what happened here about the same time Vick established Bad Newz Kennels. An all-American Lacrosse coach living in San Francisco had her throat ripped out by two dogs bred to fight, owned by white attorneys with connections to the Aryan Nation. This is just one example of how over the past 10 years dog fighting has grown from an isolated Southern red-neck blood sport into a serious problem for our neighborhoods, rural, urban, black, and white. Dog fighting also became interwoven with illegal racketeering, gambling, weapons, gang activity and drugs.
And, as you pointed out, the presence of dogs bred and trained to fight in our communities has increased the risk of attacks, especially on little kids. Kids exposed to dog fighting think this kind of cruelty is normal, promoting insensitivity to human suffering, enthusiasm for violence, and a lack of respect for the law. This is bad stuff for people, not just dogs.
Also over the past decade a subculture promoting dog fighting started to grow among our professional athletes. Former NBA forward Qyntel Woods faced charges of dog fighting before pleading guilty to animal abuse in 2005 and former NFL running back LeShon Johnson pled guilty to three charges related to dog fighting in 2005. Since dog fighting became a Federal Felony this year, any professional athlete who fights dogs, or even attends a dog fight, is a fool, putting his team and his career at risk.

Very good article and I agree with much of it.I have wondered myself how people would feel if it was any other animal other than dogs.I myself would never own a pitbull ive heard to many horror stories of children wandering into yards and being mauled by them and I personally do not like the breed but thats me.Im just glad that hopefully all of this will start winding up now and we can enjoy the NFL season.

This is absolutly rediculous... first of all, animals arent born cruel. They are how they are as a direct result from their owners and environment. All pit bulls are not dangerous, I own a female pit bull who is absolutly amazing and one of the most loving dogs I've known. No matter if the dogs were relaced with elephants, it would still be the same out roar. If people were shooting, drowing, electrocuting and hanging elephants or any other animal, dont you think people would be just as upset. Dog fighting is disgusting, Vick is disgusting,,... and anyone who sticks up for this **** is just as bad........
