Well this week, the questions came few, so I'll answer the one question that I like and then I'll talk about some recent news from the soccer world.
I was asked recently about what it means for a team to be moved up or down a division. Well, every season, European leagues use the Promotion/Relegation System. Depending on the size of the league, teams are moved up and down divisions. So I'll just use the English Football Pyramid as an example. In England, you have 4 divisions. Football League Two, Football League One, Football League Championship, and the English Premier League. Every season, the two best teams and 1 other team who wins a playoff advance to the Premiership, while the bottom three teams from the Premiership drop into the Championship. This also continues in the other divisions. That is basically it, and that's why teams don't ever take a game off in the EPL. Because if they do, they mat lose all the money from TV contracts that are available.
This section of the Mailbag this week is going to be my opinios of two things going on.
The first is about Ajax of Amsterdam's young Dutch striker, Klaas Jan Huntelaar. In Ajax's last match, he scored a tally of 4 goals. He looks to be one of the most promising players in the world. Come World Cup 2010, look for Huntelaar to be a huge star. He could also become one of the highest paid players in the world and be on one of the best teams.
Secondly, there is the business of is the Alves boys. Daniel Alves is currently being coveted by Chelsea. To me, the signing of Alves would be huge. They already are deep and this will only sure up that right side on defense or midfield. The other Alves is Heerenveen striker Alfonso Alves. Last season, he scored 34 goals in a not so deep Dutch Eredivisie. But 34 goals is 34 goals. I don't care if you are in the MLS, it is stilll impressive. Any team could use a player of that caliber and Middlesborough may be getting him. These two players could bring great things to the EPL, let's hope these deals get done.
If you would like to have a question answered here on the Soccer Mailbag, please send any questions to Keeper by Thursday. Thanks.
