It's been a long seven months since the 2006 Boston Red Sox gave up on The Nation. I can't remember which day it was exactly, but it was probably July 31st, 2006, when Jason Varitek was yaked after hurting his knee. The season ended right there.

But this is a new year. New faces look promising. There a somewhat elderly yet stable veteran corps. Johnny Pesky has been told to retire again and the Sox management are trying to squeeze every dollar and every cent out of the Old Green Beast. They will, of course. And as soon she can give no more, they'll find a long-forgotten nook that will suffer having a seat bolted to it and one more ticket will become available. Another $3250. Not counting beer, hot dogs and stale cotton candy.

I'm not down on the Sox. I'm experienced. 2004 was the best year ever. 2005 was worse than a St. Paddy's hangover.

But this year will be different. I'll be watching 162 and taking notes.
