It wasn't pretty, but the Steelers first team out-played the Eagles unit in the first half of tonight's exhibition game. I am not a big fan of exhibition football. You seldom see enough to get a clear view of what you'll see once it cranks up in two weeks.
But the next-to-last game gives you the best view of what your team is going to put on the field. Now, don't get me wrong, teams are not showing the full package. The Steelers have been very vanilla throughout the preseason, but tonight we got a glimpse of what they are capable of in 2007.
I am excited to see how Mike Tomlin's maiden voyage goes this season. He is dominant personality who is under control on the sidelines. A stark difference from Bill Cowher who was all over the place, and I do not mean that as a criticism. They are two different personalities and either can work as evidenced by the last two Super Bowl champion coaches (Cowher and Tony Dungy).
Roethlisberger has to take care of the ball this season. Take away some key turnovers and last year's squad makes the playoffs. It's not all on his shoulders however; the offensive line needs to pick up its game to give him time to make the right decision.
The defense needs to pressure the quarterback. The Steelers struggled in pressuring the opponent last year. This year it needs to make a statement.
Can Sept 9 get here soon enough? And starting with the Browns, does it get any better?

D fence D fence looks good so far now we have what was a thin position at LB turned around this year now has a lot of depth Timmons,Woodley,Haggins,Harrison,Foote,Farrior, I know these guys will make the team with Klint & Arnold on the bubble with a few more guys will have to wait and see but I like how this unit is shaping up some thought that we would be weak at OLB but I don't think so....

Good call J. I am not ready to say we have depth until Timmons and Woodley play up to par in the regular season. One thing on Timmons, late in the game on a PR by Bloom, he ran him down showing tremendous burst and agility.
We have more depth and youth than in previous years. A name that might need to be thrown in there is Rian Wallace. He can play inside and out and is good on ST.

i still worry about the secondary... a solid QB is going to torch the corners. i hope i'm wrong... i liked what the offense did for the most part... lots of screens, some balls to the TE, etc...

Chris....this team reminds me of our 15-1 year coming off a bad defensive year the one before. Pressure makes our secondary better. No secondary can get it done without pressure on the QB. I expect Ike Taylor to step up again this year and our safeties are strong. I agree on the screens and TE usage. We need to control the ball as well because our D relies on energy and speed and if they are on the field more than the O, it could be a problem later in the year. All-in-all, I am optimistic.
