It is Monday, August 27th, and the Yankees are 7.5 back in the east, and 2.0 back in the Wild Card. As a Yankee fan, I've been hoping all of these streaks that the Yankees have gone on, where they have gone 8-2, 9-1 in 10 games would lift the Yankees ahead of the Red Sox, but I've come to the conclusion, the Red Sox just don't lose. It seems whenever the Yankees lose, the Red Sox gain another game over them. It also seems that after the Yankees go 8-2 in 10, they then go 4-6 in 10 games. If the Yankees want a late season run, they need to play more consistent, and sweep the Red Sox in the upcoming series. If the Yankees sweep, they will get all of those games up on the Red Sox. To play more consistent, they need to look at the starters. The pitching is what has been hit or miss all season. Most Yankees pitchers have been inconsistent at times, especially Mussina and Wang. These two pitchers are completely different, Mussina, is 38 years old, and many argue he may be losing is stuff, and trying to throw perfect pitches. Wang is only 27, and is still learning his way around the league. It is somewhat normal for Wang to be eratic, but for Mussina, I'm a firm believer that his role might need to be lowered. I really think that his next two starts should determine if he is a starter for the rest of the season, or if he will be a bullpen pitcher. People may say "who will take his spot?" and my answer is simply, I don't know, but this is really what the dog-days of the basbeall season are about, finding ways to win. Right now, the Yankees are in too tight of a playoff run to hope that Mussina doesn't have another start where he goes 2 1/3 innings, with 7 runs allowed. No matter if the Yankees make the playoffs, this was a heavily dissapointing season. They were under .500 for about half the season, and only now are they really starting to threaten the Sox, and the Wild Card. The time is now, if the Yankees want to see October.
