In today's Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, Mike Prisuta suggested that the Steelers should do what it takes to extend Alan Faneca.  As one of the game's elite guards, and with the importance the Steelers place on the offensive line, one has to give this idea strong consideration.

Why I disagree:  Faneca is entering his 11th season with the team and turns 31 in December.  A long-term deal would not be financially responsible for the franchise.

This is the down side to the salary cap system.  While it has allowed every team in the league the possibility to win year-in, year-out, it does not allow for blind loyalty.

My heart says, sign him up.  But the Steelers cannot afford the salary cap hit for a player who should already be in decline, although he has not shown signs of it.  A team has to use its head, especially considering signings needed in the coming years which will include franchise QB Ben Roethlisberger.  At his age, what are the chances he maintains a Pro Bowl level for five more years?  Answer:  very slim.

Balancing it out, the Steelers cannot pay Faneca what he deserves and he is not going to take a team-loyal discount to stay.  And he shouldn't, he has a family to think about.  If the Steelers are serious about their future, they cannot extend Faneca.  It's the system.

Let him go.... the Steelers play the cap too close to be able to afford him.... they have Ben, Hampton. Keisel, Smith, Polamalu, Willie, hines, and Santonio all signed thru 09... use the 1st rounder next year on a lineman stud...

Unfortunately, I say let him go, unless they can get him for a 3 year deal that doesn't totally break the bank. And he's likely not going to accept 3, so that's probably a moot point. It's better to let a player go a year or two early than to have him chewing up cap by signing him to a big contract that continues to handcuff them for 2-3 years past his prime.

Faneca could still be an above average player in 4 years, but odds are against it. He's started allot of games and taken allot of punishment in his years w/ the Steelers. They're better off to let him go and sign a younger FA for the same contract they'd give Faneca. I don't keep up with OL contracts, but I'd imagine there would be a few coming up next year.
