Sorry for the pun, but there are two position areas on the football field that get little acclaim when they play well and aren't always blamed for the miscues of others when they play poorly.  That would be the offensive and defensive lines.  On the Steelers, the play of both is vital.

The offensive line sets the standard for playing the Steeler way.  Big, bruising and inflicting its will on its opponents is what Steeler fans come to expect from its offense.  For the offense to do it, the offensive line has to play at a high level.  That level dropped in 2006 after banner 2004 and 2005 seasons.

Roethlisberger is a much better QB when he has time to throw.  Willie Parker is a much better RB when he has room to roam.  The line has been restructured and there is a balance of grizzled vets and up-and-comers.  Alan Faneca and Marvel Smith need to stay healthy to continue to pace the line's play.  Kendall Simmons and Max Starks return on the right side with Starks getting pushed by second-year man Willie Colon.

The wildcard comes at center.  Sean Mahan and Chukky Okobi battle to replace former All-Pro Jeff Hartings.  Starting center is a badge of honor for the Steelers.  The chosen one has a lot to live up to.

Defensively, the Steelers thrive on pressuring the quarterback.  The secondary is that much better when the front seven does it's job.  It will be interesting to see how James Harrison fits in as Joey Porter's replacement and the how the rookies Lamarr Woodley and Lawrence Timmons fit in.

The D line is as strong as it has ever been.  Casey Hampton anchors it flanked by Aaron Smith and Brett Keisel.  Look for the front seven to have a resurgence much like in 2004 after a poor 2003 season.

When you talk about the great Steeler teams of the last 25 years, each is anchored by strong lines on both sides of the ball.  Their play is the key to a successful 2007.
