There was a recent report stating that Bill Cowher has no plans to coach either this year or 2008 but that he would consider returning in 2009.

Question: Why walk away if your plan was only to come back later? If indeed you were going to walk away wouldn't it be for good? Great coaches rack up wins in the triple digits and win title after title (Gibbs, Walsh, Noll) and walk away and (very rarely) ever come back. Good coaches do the same as great ones when it comes to racking up the wins but when it comes to titles it's either 1 or none and thats where Cowher would fit in over 160 wins multiple playoff appearances and yet only one SB to show for it.

And yet it is always those good coaches that come back for more.

Question: Is Cowher a Hall of Fame worthy candidate? Given his success as a coach I would say yes but the fact that he had so many playoff collapses (6 AFC title game appearances 4 defeats) would probably put him out of contention. But who knows? His worthiness for the Hall is debatable. We won't even know if a potential comeback by Cowher would help or hurt his legacy but until then we'll have to wait and see.
