Who will the Cincinnati Reds call up when the roster expands in Sept? There are a couple of hot prospects that Reds fans would like to see, but will they get the opportunity? The key to remember in all this: the Reds need to do what is best for the franchise.
Let's start with the obvious, IF/OF Joey Votto needs to be called up. He has had two outstanding minor league seasons and deserves the experience. Once officially eliminated, and with six games each against the Cubs, Cards and Brewers, there is still hope, Votto should get Hatteberg's at bats to see how he reacts. Why you may not see Votto? Calling him up starts his arbitration clock when it is not absolutely necessary. That said, he deserves it.
Another obvious move is to return Homer Bailey to the rotation as soon as he is deemed healthy. The rotation is in flux and he needs the experience. With the injury to Bobby Livingston and the ineffectiveness of Elizardo Ramirez and Phil Dumatrait, Bailey elicits hope.
Others I'd expect to see include: RP Marcus McBeth, SP Elizardo Ramirez, SP/RP Kirk Saarloos, RP Brad Salmon, C Ryan Jorgensen and OF Buck Coats.
Who will you not see: OF Jay Bruce and SP Johnny Cueto. Why? Because neither man is on the 40-man roster. Two players would have to be cut to bring either up. Bruce has no shot because there is no spt in the OF for him to fill. Cueto is another story
Ramirez cleared waivers when he was sent down this week. That could mean he can be taken off the 40-man roster and replaced with Cueto. Cueto is an exciting prospect believed to be major league ready by the AAA coaching staff. He makes sense as well with the Reds injury depletion in the starting rotation.
