The App St win over Michigan yesterday inspired me to list the biggest upsets in my memory. This is not meant to be an exhaustive list, just the ones that stick out to me.
Southern Miss over Auburn - This one was on homecoming when I was in 2nd grade. It was tough being an Auburn fan in those days.
BC over Notre Dame - The Irish had just beaten Florida St in the "Game of the Century" a week before. This wouldn't be the first time BC dashed ND's hopes of another national title.
Virginia over Florida St - The 'Noles' first conference loss since joining the ACC. It took a few more years for it to start happening on a regular basis.
Texas over Nebraska - This was the game that kept Nebraska from Winning 4 national titles in a row. They were licking their chops at the chance to play Florida again.
Michigan St over Ohio St - In the first year of the BCS, controversy was brewing when Ohio St, UCLA, Kansas St, Tennessee, and Arkansas were all undefeated in mid November. The Spartans' win over the Buckeyes paved the way for other big wins like Texas A&M over Kansas St and Miami over UCLA.
UAB over LSU - That game was the biggest win in UAB's history. More importantly, it was Nick Saban's first year. I remember thinking after the game that LSU had hired itself another Jerry DiNardo or Curly Hallman. I guess I was wrong.
Central Florida over Alabama - That was the icing on the cake for one of the most satisfying college football seasons of my lifetime. Auburn won the SEC West and Bama went 3-8.
Mississippi St over Florida - When this one happened, I was on a backpacking trip, so a radio was my only way of getting the score. A guy in my group heard the score and called it out to us, but we thought he was joking. Sure enough, it was real.
South Florida over Louisville - Before this game, I didn't know the difference between South Florida, Florida Atlantic, or Florida International. They busted through in a big way, beating a top-10 team when they were unranked. They didn't just beat the Cardinals, they demolished them.
UCLA over USC - I bet SC fans were buying up their tickets to Glendale after their thrashing of Notre Dame the previous week. The Trojans are always at their best in big games. Too bad they didn't treat this one as one of those big games.
Appalachian St over Michigan - The first ever FCS win over a ranked opponent comes against the #5 team in the country. I couldn't imagine ever saying this after the first game of the season, but the Wolverines have no shot at the National Title now.
What others would you add to the list?
