Last week, it was reported that top NFL prospects Gaines Adams, Calvin Johnson, and Amobi Okoye all admitted during interviews that they had tried marijuana, but had never failed a drug test. While this might be a red light to many in a league trying to crack down on behavior problems (especially for people who have been considered high-character), it shouldn't be. The number one reason to look over these admissions is that they seem to be a one-time deal. The fact that none of these players ever failed a drug test would point to that. Reason number 2 is that these are high character players. Okoye is a brilliant young man who is going to graduate college at the age of 19. Johnson went to South America to do charity work and displays none of the onfield hubris of receivers like T.O. or Keyshawn. Reason number 3 is more general and is one that SI's Don Banks points out in his latest article: these 3 are not alone in trying marijuana in college. Let's face it, the newfound freedoms of college life create an atmosphere of experimentation. It should not be considered an unforgiveable sin then that 3 young men would try marijuana. If (as I believe) it was a one time deal, then these people should be commended for not falling prey to a drug that could put a damper on their ****. It remains to be seen whether this news will affect their draft stock (all signs point to it won't), but people shouldn't make Adams, Johnson, and Okoye out to be character risks.
