With running backs leading the Heisman race this year, I decided to do a little research about each one. Of the top 5 running backs in the nation (Darren McFadden, Steve Slaton, Mike Hart, Ray Rice, P.J.Hill) only one(McFadden) was a 5-star recruit. The others were all 3-star recruits or less. Most were ranked down because of size(Hart, Slaton, Hill, and Rice)but they have all reached the top of their respective games and now fight for the coveted Doak Walker Award.(Darren McFadden is the returning winner).
Steve Slaton- Was a 3-star recruti out of Pennslyvania. Originally commited to Maryland but backed out when his scholarship was withdrawn. Commited to West Virginia and became starter at mid-season as a freshman and the rest is history. Was an All-Big East selection last year.
Mike Hart- Was the lesser of the 2 running backs in his class. Beat 4-star Max Martin(who transferred after his sopohmore year) and Dave Underwood for the starting job as a freshman. Won freshman of the year award. Was an All-Big Ten selection last year.
P.J. Hill- Got injured in his true freshman year and redshirted while transfer Brian Calhoun dominated. Started as a redshirt freshman, after Calhoun skipped to the pros, and became an instant impact player.
Ray Rice- Was regarded less that fullback Brian Leonard starting last year, but he quickly became the better. After rushing for the fifth most yards in the nation last year, he established himself as a legit Heisman hopeful.
