You know the drill...savor..... This week's topic:
The College Footbal Ranking system
No one is more giddy about the arrival of college football than yours truely. However, I find these preseason polls and rankings obsurd. Case in point...ESPN releases a preseason top 25 in January. The steam has barely stopped rising off of the latest rankings controversey and they are already lining them up for next year?
Second, we come into week #1 with our top 25 fixed and in place, despite the fact that not one game has been played. I am leaning more and more that the "official" polls that are actually factored into determining the BCS rankings should hold off for at least the first two weeks of the season before playing the shell game that it really is.
Third, one would assume that these polls are determined through careful calculations and scientifically based theories. We all have visions of some megacomputer somewhere out in the desert where stats, records, strength of schedules are fed into and out comes your rankings for the week. But, obviously this is not so, since Michigan ranked #5 before its loss to Appalachian St., now is not even in the top 25. While the Big Blue should drop in the rankings, you cannot tell me this merits complete removal from the poll?
Point given is this, we are working under the impression that these rankings are non-biased and objectionable removing the human error. Yea sure. And Jim Tressel didn't sit and spin on his family room floor when he found out Michigan lost.
The greatest game is in fullswing....but we must also accept it warts and all.
Thanks for playing along!

Agreed. The preseason polls, and season polls are ridiculous. Since college football includes three different polls to make out the number 1, the other two are based on what a human thinks. Not very unbiased in my opinion.
