The list of strange things that have happened at this Olympics is very long. First we had the tragic & completely avoidable death of a luger before the games even started. Then we had the double torch lighting. Let's see. We'll have the opening ceremony indoors with an inside torch, which, by the way, will include a malfunctioning arm, & then, because the IOC requires the torch to be visible to all residents of the host city, we'll have a second public caldron (secretly built) & have one of the people who lit the inside torch hop in a cab, so he can light this other torch.
Then we had the malfunctioning electric zamboni that tore up the speed skating ice. I'm not making this up. And of course, athletes who have never done anything are winning speed skating medals. Not to mention short track AKA roller derby on ice. BTW has Apollo Ohno ever won a race in which his opponents didn't crash into one another?
This was followed by the weather issues at skiing & again nobodies winning races. The woman who won the Super G had won a total of 2 races in her entire career, while Lindsay Vonn, who got bronze has won 31.
And who is the top medal winner this time around. The serious skier who is happily helping his teammates & putting up great performances? Wait for it-Bode "party dude" Miller. Amazing. This is the guy who 4 years ago was only interested in drinking & partying & stumbled through 5 events while basically giving the finger to all serious competitors. He should have had no chance even medaling in the super combined because he only finished 7th in the downhill portion. Instead he puts up this crazy performance in the slalom, beating out the specialists & ends up with the gold.
Controversies. We have complaints about how the womens super g course was set "Lindsay Vonn proof" kind of like how Augusta tries to make the Masters "tiger proof". We have 2 countries complaining about the british woman who won the skeleton. Something about ridges on her helmet. Really? Ridges. There was also a complaint about Simonn Amann's skis when he won ski jumping. Oh boy. And of course the Russian ice dancers who thought it would be a good idea to make fun of aborigines with their costumes. And you wonder why real sports fans can't abide figure skating.
And then there's Canada's "own the podium" program. Not working out to well is it. Yes they have won gold medals, but it's a week performance by the host nation. Then there's yesterday's game. By all rights Canada should have destroyed team USA. Didn't happen. The superstar laden team ran into a hot goalie & despite out shooting the US 45-23 ended up losing. Now they have to win 4 straight to get a gold medal.
Another week to go. looking for great performances & less silliness.
