I'm a bigtime Jets fan. When I think of combine I think of Dwayne Robertson and Vernon Gholston.
Jets go to combine and see big athletic super strong and quick Dwayne Robertson. Mediocre Playing career, big combine. They draft him at pick 4 in the 1st round. Robertson gets 1 or 2 sacks a year, out of the league in 5 years.
Derelle Revis and David Harris. Both have great college careers, neither have great combines. Both turn out to be the best at their positions in the entire draft.
Shonn Greene last year didn't run fast, didn't bench the most, didn't have a good vertical, but to this point he's been the best rookie running back of 2009.
Last but not least. Anquan Boldin had a horrible run time, and poor combine, but was the best.
The only reason for the combine is rounds 3-7. You do not pick a player, even if he runs a 4.11 and benches 40 times. If he had a mediocre career, it's for a reason. If he was the 3rd QB on the roster, but is bursting with potential, than take a flier on him after your team needs have been met. Do you hear me Oakland!?!?!
I'm gonna give away the secret of the combine. Here's the trick, so call me the next NFL insider. Don't worry 1 bit about missing out on the next big star because he got draft in the 7th round and you missed him 7 times. A team is not made by 1 Tom Brady. It is made by 33 players. 11 Offense, 11 Defense, and 11 special teams.
Teams that use the combine well are Chicago. They used a speed/workout to pick up a skilled speedster WR in Jonny Knox. But they waited until round 4 to do it. A few years ago they got a good DE in the 4th as well after a good combine.
The Broncos picked Eddie Royal in the 2nd or 3rd after he turned in a monster combine. They didn't reach in the 1st. They waited until the time was right and opportunity for failure was minimal.
So Jets fans, and staff if your listening. Can we possibly trade down, get an extra pick and get one of the many talented players that will be available in round 2. I can think off the top of my head of CB Kyle Williams, DE/DT Oldrich, WR's Tate, Williams (USC), or Arelius Benn.
