The fifth Longhorn football player to be arrested since June. I have made my fair share of jokes about Miami being "thug u", by what is going on in Austin? These kids are given an opportunity that most high school football players would dream of, and that is playing for a high profile d-1 school, while getting a quality education.
It has also become increasingly discouraging over the last few years to see these college kids throwing away bright futures for selfish reasons. Clarett and Williams try to beat the NFL age policy, Ramonce Taylor with drugs, Bomar and Quinn taking money they didn't earn, and countless others. This is Gatewood's second arrest related to drugs, and as the story says, charges were dropped from the arrest last year; still he apparently has some character issues that need to be resolved. Gatewood should be dismissed from the team to avoid any further negative press coverage he may attract with more stupid decisions. This will be one chance to teach this young man football players are not above the rest, and hopefully it will help him succeed in the future.
Perhaps the coaches need to be a little tougher and let players know that behavior like this is not accepted, nor will it be tolerated, and suspend these athletes for a year even over their first offense. Gatewood's one game suspension last year apparently did nothing to deter his actions that led to this second arrest. Maybe a year off might seem excessive, but it would definitely send a message of no tolerance. Otherwise, I guess we can just watch them when and if they get to the NFL serve four games, and be equally disgusted.
