While as most of you can plainly see, I am a Texas Longhorn fan. That being said I hope that Williams is not allowed back into the NFL.
I am a believer in second chances, but the Ricky Williams saga has gone way past that, and does not appear that it will change, regardless of how many times Williams is given a "second chance".
Williams claims, "I am an honest, God-fearing man who is intensely dedicated to being the best person I can be on and off the football field. There is no need to smear my name or to defame my character for the sake of news. When the time is right, God willing, I will be back on the field scoring touchdowns for whatever team is fortunate enough to believe in me". He also went on that article to thank fans and say, "...I am strong, clean, and happily preparing myself for a triumphant return to the NFL." These quotes come from an ESPN article http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=2867381 after Williams had failed his second drug test in about a month. To this I say, Mr. Williams, it is good that you are secure in your religious beliefs, and through your struggles you have become "clean", but to give you yet another shot in the NFL, where you could possibly have yet another slip up, would be embarrasing not only for you, but for the league. Also, it should be said that if Williams was "clean" as he so claimed, then he should not have failed drug tests months before the season was to start, knowing he was going to be tested.
Roger Goodell has been, in my opinion, very good for the NFL. I feel that his no nonsense stance with players has been very well received by many, and can only hope for a day when kids, and even some adults, do not have to read or hear about their heroes being arrested, suspended, or banned. I can only hope that Roger Goodell can influence both the NBA and MLB commissioners to take a harder stance with the players under them as well.
I am sorry Mr. Williams, but if the decision was mine I would have to respectively decline your reinstatement into a league that is trying to avoid and seperate itself from negative images.
