Three months remain in in the college football regular season, but a betting man might lay down a lot of money right now that USC will meet LSU for the national championship. The next three months of college football may well determine nothing more than which teams play in the other bowl games. Some outstanding football remains to be played all over the country, sure, but never has it appeared so early in a season that there are only two teams that appear destined to play that final game.

I like Penn State, and I like Florida, too - two of my favorite teams, actually. Oklahoma put a hurting on Miami, and doesn't Boston College look like they may be the class of the ACC? The Big East has a handful of great teams, too, but don't expect any of them to hurdle into the top two spots. Barring USC or LSU being upset (and that doesn't look like it's going to happen), Penn State, Florida, Oklahoma, West Virginia and Boston College will be playing a lot closer to New Year's Day than they would like.

Have you ever seen two teams (USC and LSU) with such speed, such smothering defenses, and such ability to seemingly score at will? Not in this decade you haven't. They aren't just winning ball games, they are consistently dominating their opponents, and making it look easy.

Florida looks like a not too distant third in this race, and will probably play LSU twice this year. It's always hard to beat the same team twice in one season, and a Florida win in one of those games is likely the biggest obstacle to two undefeated teams meeting for the championship. A lot of Big Ten fans might say, "Hey, if Ohio State or Penn State goes undefeated, then they deserve to be in the championship game over a one-loss LSU!" Nice try, but an undefeated Big Ten team just isn't what it used to be.

If they don't beat themselves during the regular season, look for USC and LSU in the championship game.
