Nothing fires up fans of both schools more than the mere thought of in-state rivalry week. A fun week, a great game. (even if you lose) It's great for the fans, players, and coaches. What you may not know is that it isn't all that great for UI and it's athletic department.
When this series was revived ISU got over on UI bigtime. They continue to reap the benefits of that "contract" year after year.
Here's the problem. The visiting team gets 20% of the home team's revenue for the UI vs ISU game each year. Sounds fair right? Wrong. Kinnick holds 15,000 more people than Jack Trice. Not to mention that Jamie Pollard jacked up the ticket price for Iowa fans this year to $90. ISU fans don't pay that much. So ISU brings home a nice check whenever they visit Iowa City. When the Hawks came home from Ames, they must have wondered, "How did we just lose twice?!"
Interestingly, Pollard, who can't seem to locate the contract, says it expires in 2020. Word out of Gary Barta's office is 2010.
Look for this one to be a big squabble between the two schools. We all love this series. Even more when we win. But when Iowa makes more money playing a game vs Northern Illinois at Soldier Field than it does going to a Big 12 school, something is obviously wrong.
