So here we go again. I've been waiting since 1983 for a legitimate title. My favorite shirt says it best. "Tortured Philly Fan. No cup, now crown, no title, no tropy" Can some Philly franchise PLEASE act with urgency besides the Flyers? At the beginning of EVERY year Philly franchises have bank, and plenty of it. However, do they ever spend that money? Of course not. Why? I have no idea. I think they're too worried about the future to have a "win now" mentality. I'll mainly stick with Football, but we all know that the Phillies don't like to spend money either.
The Eagles tried it once with TO, and look where it got them. Yea, maybe he wasn't your best bet, because down the line it hurt them, but adding him, took them to the promised land. Regardless of what any Eagles fan says, you can't deny that. Now look at where we are. We let Stallworth go and pick up Kurtis. What I've seen the first two games is a QB that doesn't have his timing down, and a receiving core that can't get open. The Packers played press in week one, and guess what, the Skins did the same thing in week 2, and look where it got us, now we're 0-2.
Can we please take a page out of the Patriots book? Look at what they did this offseason. They picked up Adalius Thomas, grabbed Moss for a 4th round pick, then signed Stallworth and Welker. Brady has made his mark on the NFL having nobody to throw the ball to. What does NE do? They go out and pick up an incredibly solid receiving core, to help him immediately. What does Philly do? Trade away their 1st round pick so the Cowboys can pick up Spencer (which I think will eventually haunt them down the road). Take a QB in the 2nd round instead of keeping the 1st pick and getting Mcnabb a weapon. Sign an aged LB in Spikes that has maybe 1-3 years left in him if that. Release Trotter. Then sign Kurtis, as if he's a viable replacement for Stallworth. Now we're suffering. Mcnabb got it done for YEARS with Thrash and Pinkston, just as Brady did with his receivers, however we're shying away from explosive receivers with character issues because of the TO incident. You don't win if you don't take chances, and you can't win NOW if you're planning for the future. Philly has been planning for the future since the beginning of the draft, and in todays NFL, the window of oppurtunity for teams is becomming smaller and smaller. What does Philly do in free agency? They sign old defensive players that people can't afford or don't want. Was Spikes and upgrade? Of course, that goes without saying. However, there were PLENTY of players out there that could have made immediate impacts as well.
I love the Eagles, but they remind me of a lazy salesman. Somebody that's willing to do what it takes just to show up or keep their job. On the other hand, you've got teams like the Pats, who will do whatever it takes (obviously) to win. I can't commend them for their cheating, however, I can without a doubt commend them for their urgency to win NOW, and to show their QB, players, and fans that they will do whatever it takes to get them and that team to the big game. All in all, I'm tired of Philly franchises sitting on their money like Mr. Scrooge. This city NEEDS a championship. You win NOW through free agency, you win later through the draft. Honestly, I'll never turn my back on Philly, but at the same time, can I wait another 10-20 years for a championship? I'm honestly finding myself tired of the conservitive franchise. I want to see some urgency. I want to see the Eagles show the city of Philadelphia that they want to win NOW, no matter what the price. I'm not calling for Reid or Mcnabb's head, I'm just calling for some money to be dropped on a player that would obviously be beneficial to the progress of an organization. I have so much more I could write about this, but at this moment in time, it's not the easiest thing being an ND fan and a Philly fan. What I see every year, is TONS of cap room, and conservative if NO free agency signings to win NOW! It's time for Philly to let it's balls drop! I know it's kind of a moot point now, but you can't help but look back and think how many things could have been done differently just a few months ago.
