Today was the first Saturday here in the North Georgia mountains that was actually good enough weather for fishing, so me and my dad decided to go to a lake in nearby Gordon County, about an hour away. Now that the day is almost over, I know that not much worse could have went wrong. Here's a recap of the entire day:

7 a.m. - I wake up, ready to go fishing. I usually have to get up at this time when fishing trips are planned, but there's a problem on this day. No one is home to watch my little sister, so the early rise is for not. I play video games and watch SportsCenter until it's time to get serious.

11 a.m. - It's clear that we can go now, but another problem has arisen: the key to the boat is gone. If there's no key, then there's no way to crank the motor. I frantically begin searching. How hard could it be to find a set of boat keys?

12 p.m. - I've almost given up. I've looked every place that I can think of. As I walk by where the keys should be, I noticed something in the plant sitting in the corner. The keys. "Wow, I'm glad I can finally get the distractions out of the way". Wrong thought for this day.

12:30 p.m. - As we get ready to leave, Dad decides to try out the motor before we leave. There's a problem: there's a short in the wiring. No matter, we still have the trolling motor. So the trip's still on, and we head to the lake.

1:00 p.m. - Before we get the boat in the water, Dad decides to mess with the trolling motor, which is operated by a foot petal. Turns out there's a short there too. After 15 minutes of fiddling, it begins to work. Close one. Now all we have to do is back the boat in the water and we can fish...

1:05 p.m. - After 3 attempts to get the boat off the trailer, it is apparent that a strap has gotten caught on the boat. After the strap is removed, the boat finally comes off. So does a board from the trailer. It's clear we will just have to fish now and worry about that later.

1:25 p.m. - First hit of the day, and it feels like a big one. It happens right beside the dam at the lake. However, it's clear that something is wrong. Apparently this fish has wrapped itself around a pipe on the dam that runs down under the water. After about 30 minutes of fighting furiously to get this fish out of the water and untangled from the pipe, the line breaks. If anyone asks, I say it was a 12 pound bass.

1:30 p.m. - After the whole fish debacle, I ask my dad to move us around the bend. Problem. The trolling motor is done for good. So there are two choices: Paddle around the lake, or just let the wind move us around. We take the easier route.

2:00 p.m. - 30 minutes have passed, and we are now in the middle of the lake. We've had no bites, and all I can think about is how we are going to get back to shore. Disgusted at how this perfect day for fishing has went, I suggest we head to the boat ramp before the day gets any worse. Knowing it would take a tragedy for that to happen, we start paddling.

2:30 p.m. - After several intervals of paddling then resting, we make it back to the ramp. Dad heads to the truck, leaving me to reflect on what has happened today. As I sit there, I began to realize why some people really enjoy not fooling with boats and just fishing off the bank.

2:40 p.m. - Because no motors on the boat work, we have to line up the boat with our strength and a rope. After going about knee-deep in water, my dad leads the boat on line, while I pull as hard as I can to get it all the way up. After we get the boat fastened to the trailer, we leave.

3:45 p.m. - We get home. I lay down. I've never been so happy to be home from fishing.

So there you have it, my first day of fishing in 2010. No fish, one bite, and plenty of headaches. I just hope this isn't a precursor to the rest of the fishing trips I take.
