The coaching picture on the west coast has changed again. Rivals is reporting that former Southern California coach Mike Gillespie is going to take over at UC Irvine. Mike Gillespie returns to coaching college baseball after one year away in which he was manager of the Staten Island Yankees (New York Yankees' short season class A affiliate in the New York-Penn League). He led the Yankees to the playoffs where they lost in the first round. He was with USC for 20 years and had a record of 763-471-2. That was a winning percentage of .618. He also has one national championship with USC (1998).
It is also reported that Cal State Los Angeles coach Pat Shine will be an assistant coach for Mike Gillespie at UC Irvine. Pat Shine has history with the Anteaters as he was an assistant on John Savage's staff when he coached at UC Irvine.
